Parent Support

Parent Support

Working Together to Support Your Child’s Growth

Parents play an important role in their child’s emotional development and progress in therapy. While most play therapy sessions are held individually with the child, parent involvement is an important part of helping children build lasting skills.

At Playful Pathways Counseling, I work collaboratively with parents to help them better understand their child’s emotional needs and learn ways to support progress at home.

When children feel supported both in therapy and at home, positive changes are more likely to continue in everyday life.

Why Parent Involvement Matters

Children often express emotions through behavior before they have the words to explain what they are feeling. When parents understand what their child is experiencing emotionally, it becomes easier to respond in supportive and effective ways.

Parent support during the therapy process can help families:

• better understand their child’s emotions and behavior
• respond more calmly and effectively to challenging situations
• support emotional regulation skills at home
• strengthen the parent-child relationship
• reinforce coping strategies learned in therapy

Small changes in how adults respond to children’s emotions can make a meaningful difference over time.

How Parents Are Involved

Parent involvement may look different depending on each child’s needs, but collaboration is always an important part of the process.

Parent Sessions

At times we may schedule parent sessions to discuss your child’s progress, explore concerns, and talk through strategies that may help support your child at home.

These conversations allow us to work together to better understand your child’s emotional needs.

Parent Guidance and Support

Throughout therapy, I may share ideas, resources, or strategies that can help parents support their child between sessions.

This may include suggestions for responding to emotional outbursts, helping children express feelings, or supporting calming strategies.

Parent–Child Sessions

Occasionally, sessions may include both the parent and child. These sessions can help strengthen communication, practice new skills, and support the parent-child relationship.

Supporting Your Child at Home

Parents often ask how they can help their child between therapy sessions. While every child is different, small everyday interactions can support emotional development.

Examples may include:

• helping children identify and name their feelings
• modeling calm responses during difficult moments
• practicing coping strategies together
• maintaining consistent routines and expectations

During therapy, we will talk about ways you can support your child’s growth in everyday situations.

Next Steps

If your child is struggling with big emotions, anxiety, or behavioral challenges, play therapy can provide a supportive space where they can grow and develop new skills.
